Fen Magic
Us British like nothing better than to talk about the weather, or should I say, moan about it, (apart from football that is) well I’ve enjoyed this summer so far, out and about on the fens the weather feels kind of magnified: if it’s sunny it’s scorching because there is hardly any shade, and if it’s windy it’s more like a gale because it’s so exposed and there’s nothing to protect you, and I like these extremes.
This is a fantastic time of year, the fens are so full of life, insects, birds, snakes, fish – it’s magical and awe-inspiring. Walking around Wicken Fen you see so many different kinds of dragonflies, some of the large ones seem to follow you as you walk along beside the water, there are so many fish there too. Towards the end of the day I have often seen groups of roe deer in the fields, they soon notice you and study your every movement at a safe distance.
If you haven’t already, get yourself out there and experience some of that fen magic.
