On Wednesday 26th September Amnesty International Ely City Group will hold its third lecture at Ely Cathedral. Dr Sharath Srinvasan, Director of the Centre of Governance and Human Rights, University of Cambridge, will be talking about "Peace and War in the Sudans”.
On 9 July 2011, amid great celebrations, South Sudan became the world's newest nation. More than 50 years of conflict seemed finally over. So why is there still bitter fighting north of the border, and threats of renewed conflict between the two states? And why are there currently some 170,000 refugees from Sudan in camps south of the border? Dr Sharath Srinvasan's lecture will illuminate the complex nature of 'endless' war and the pursuit of peace in the Sudans.
The lecture will be held in the Cathedral’s South Transept at 7.30 p.m. There is no entrance fee, although donations would be very welcome. Any income from this lecture will go to supporting the campaign activities of Amnesty International.
