Has the council gone too far in fining people for feeding the ducks on Ely's riverside? East Cambs District Council has announced it will fine people up to £2,500 if they are caught feeding the ducks outside a designated – what do you think?

Feeding the duck is one of the most pleasant things to do in Ely and I think the council should spend its time looking at more serious issues that face the city instead of these meaningless headline grabbing policies!

Ely's duck-feeding debate seems to have made the national media. On The Telegraph website, it compares Ely's anti-duck regime to the liberal duck-feeding situation in Cambridge.

The story quotes Guy Belcher, a nature conservation officer at Cambridge City Council: "We don't have any rules like this. We do have lots of ducks in areas like Jesus Green but we do not consider them to be an issue or health hazard. Mind you we do not have any Muscovy ducks. We encourage people to feed the ducks and birds in our open spaces and it's generally a fun activity for families."
