Where To Play Golf In Ely
Ely City Golf Club boasts a beautifully situated 18-hole, par 72 golf course that regularly hosts county competitions. It prides itself on being one of the most welcoming clubs in the region and whether you are new to the game or a seasoned professional, it will provide you with an enjoyable challenge. "We are a members club predominantly but our membership is open to all, including those who are new to the sport, and we are proud of our reputation as a friendly and welcoming club," says manager Tom Munt. "We also have a significant number of green fee visitors each year, due to the very high quality golf course we are able to offer."
The club has a practice area, putting green and a fully stocked pro shop, with three fully qualified teaching professionals offering unbiased advice on equipment and able to tutor even those first-time golfers. "Anyone is welcome at the club," says Tom Munt, "but we would recommend that due to the complexity of the sport, the first port of call for any beginners should be Andrew George and his team of PGA Professionals. They will arrange lessons so that not only the physical act of swinging a golf club can be improved but also their knowledge of the rules, history and etiquette of the game can be developed. They will also be able to advise on various membership and visitor offers that a new member may be able to benefit from."
On Par Ely Driving Range And Golf Course
The perfect venue for the beginner is the On Par Driving Range and Golf Course, situated on the sporting complex that also houses the Ely Rugby Club. Featuring a 16 bay, floodlit driving range, it also offers a 9-hole, par 31 course, with many features such as raised tees and a variety of well placed hazards. "I built the driving range and course to cater for the new golfer, as well as to be a good practice facility for existing golfers," says Graham Mawe. "I primarily aimed it at the beginner but take it from me, it is not an easy course and it's a fun course too."
For those who want to use the facilities of On Par at short notice, there is no need to book and you don't even have to own a set of clubs for the driving range, as there are clubs available for no extra cost. "We are a totally pay and play facility," says Mawe. "You can just come along without booking and have a go, either on the range or on the course. However, we do have a full membership available to those who want it, at £350 per year for unlimited use."
A recent fire has put some of its facilities temporarily out of commission but On Par continues to operate and by August 2011 it will once again be back to its full capacity. "When rebuilt, we will have a driving range almost identical to the one we had prior to the fire, with a full pro shop aimed again at the middle of the road player, with a fully operational bar and catering facilities."
The club also offers children's golfing parties and can run corporate Golf Fun Days and team building sessions. Lessons are available from fully qualified PGA professionals, as well as group classes for Adults, Juniors and Women Only sessions.
