Social networking giant Facebook has this week finally admitted that the city of Ely is in Cambridgeshire rather than Norfolk, vindicating an online protest that recruited the support of nearly 2,500 users of the site.

The protest page that took on Facebook and won!
For years the residents of Ely have been frustrated at the inability to list their location as 'Cambridgeshire' on Facebook. The site's default setting for the city and many of its surrounding villages has been incorrectly listed as 'Norfolk'. The error inspired the launch of the 'Ely is in Cambridgeshire not Norfolk!! - Get it changed!!!' campaign page on Facebook, which by this week had recruited 2,397 'likers'.
Members of the group made their voices heard with numerous appeals to the site, all of which went unheeded. The Ely People wesbite also contacted Facebook's UK office for comment on four separate occasions, but received no reply. And then, with no fanfare or announcement, this week Ely's default setting was corrected.
The change of policy was received with delight on the Facebook protest page, with the adminstrator announcing: "Guys!!!, success!!!! Your hometowns should now say Ely, Cambridgeshire!!! Hurrah!!! Pat yourselves on the back and be proud, its obviously all down to us!!!"
Facebook users were quick to congratulate the page. "Woo hoo. Nice one!" wrote Shelley Gunn, while Tracey McClelland exclaimed "At last! Well done everyone".
However, other users were quick to point out that not all of the area had been successfully updated. "Alas, Haddenham is still Norfolk – perhaps it'll take a further few years to correct that," reported Melissa King. "What bout Littleport?" bemoaned Linda Walton-Whitelock.
It seems that the battle with Facebook must go for a little while longer if we want all of the surrounding villages and towns back in the correct county. And after we've reclaimed them for Cambridgeshire, there is a growing clamour for the Isle Of Ely to be reinstated! Now that sounds like the cue for a Facebook protest!
