Staged annually, the Schools Art Competition was sponsored this year by the Hereward & Ely Rotary Club, along with stationers Tindalls and the support of many other local businesses. The quality of the artwork certainly impressed the judges and the varied array of exhibits featured 3D sculptures and mixed media work, including the striking and tasty looking piece of pottery pictured above.
"We were overwhelmed by the quality and range of the artwork and it was lovely to see so many of the young people at the preview launch," said Rotary Club president Maurice Weller.
The competition was open to all East Cambridgeshire students, with entries invited from young people aged between four and eighteen years of age. Nine local schools entered and the prize winners also included students from the King's School, Soham Village College, Highfields School, Littleport Community Primary School and Spring Meadow Infant & Nursery School. The prizes were awarded at a special preview for children, parents and staff on Friday January 13.
Ely College students submitted over 70 individual entries to the competition, which forms an important part of the school year for the Ely College art department. The successful Ely College students included Danielle Mannion, Irina Janys and Codie Butcher, who each won first prizes in their age categories, while Sasha Minns claimed a second prize. Mikayla Shelton and Jasmine Whistler both took third prizes.
