Ely City FC are not going to apply for promotion from the Ridgeons League Premier Division even if they achieve it through their performances on the pitch, with the decision being blamed on financial considerations.

According to reports, the board of the football club are not prepared to put the long term future of the club in jeopardy by putting undue pressure on their budget.

With the club currently just one position out of the promotion places, manager Alan Alsop has been quoted as saying: "I have had chats with the chairman and the board and they are not willing to put the club in financial problems. It is a bit of a shame as I would obviously like to take Ely City higher but the whole thing just is not viable."

What do the football fans of Ely think? Should financial considerations stand in the way of ambition on the pitch or is this a sensible decision?

Ely City should take promotion if they won it, otherwise it makes a farce of the wonderful pyramid system we have in English football. You have to live that dream!
